Have you ever noticed that you start a diet, lose some weight, only to gain it all back and then some? Have you tried all the diets out there but still can’t seem to lose that extra bit of weight? You may actually have a slow metabolism from years of dieting!
How does this happen?
When your body feels deprived, it creates a stress signal and holds on for dear life to all the fat “stores” in case of long-term food shortage (ie famine). While food is readily available in our modern society, our bodies have not adapted and are wired for survival. This means that if you continue to cut down on your calories, your body will continue to slow down your metabolism.
The good news is, you can heal your slow metabolism!
It is not a fast process; there is no “quick fix”. If you teach your body that your environment is safe (no famine, no major physical or mental-emotional stressors), it will learn that it is safe to relax. It will learn that it doesn’t have to stock-pile reserves because it hasn’t seen famine or high-stress in a long time.
When your body feels safe, you stop living in a state of overwhelm and can get back to feeling YOU again!
When it comes to weight loss, the type of food you eat matters much more than the number of calories. You can always improve your food quality…but you can only cut so many calories before your body fights back! Eating foods that nourish your body with the vitamins, minerals, protein, and healthy fats it needs will serve you better than trying another restrictive diet.
How do you tell your body that it’s ok to speed up that metabolism?
By consistently make healthy food choices, avoiding food sensitivities (until you have healed), getting quality sleep, keeping stress levels in check, and engaging in happy, healthy, positive relationships with friends and loved-ones. Getting regular physical activity without over-exercising and reducing your exposure to toxins will go a long way in balancing your hormones!
Not sure where to start?! This is a healing process, and can initially feel overwhelming.
